NetX Glossary

This article will help familiarize you with NetX's terminology as you move through the application.

Actions

Actions are various tasks that can be performed on assets within the application. Actions can be performed on both single assets and groups of assets (selections, folders, collections, saved searches).

Advanced search

A means of performing more complex searches, allowing users to combine multiple search criteria into one search query.

Asset

Any digital file that is stored in your NetX instance is considered an asset. These files can be of any type.

Asset detail

Every asset has a detail page, allowing users to view a wide variety of information about the asset itself as well as preview any asset content.

Asset request

Upload requests are links that allow external users (non-account holders) to upload assets into a pre-determined NetX location. These forms also allow external users to include attribute data with their uploads.

Attribute

Descriptive data relating to the asset, or assets, you are viewing. This can be data inherent to the file itself (such as file size), or custom data that has been added to provide additional information about the asset(s) in question.

Attribute set

Related attributes that have been grouped together. These sets can be configured by NetX administrators, or customized by each user

Collections

Assets can be organized into collections, allowing users to curate sets of assets in a way that is helpful to their workflow. Users can collect assets across multiple folders, add them from a search, or share collections to other users or groups.

Context menu

A context menu is a menu that is displayed by right-clicking a specific element in the application, such as a folder. Most context menus contain various actions that can be performed on an asset or object that represents a group of assets.

Dashboard

The dashboard is the landing page NetX users see after they sign in to the application. Users can customize their dashboards with pods that include a variety of content, such most recent uploads or popular search terms.

Download

Downloading allows users to pull original assets, derivative files, or attribute data from NetX to their local storage location.

Folders

Folders contain assets in a navigational tree and provide an easy way for users to browse assets.

The gallery is the primary viewing area for displaying assets in a variety of contexts such as folders or searches. Assets are presented with thumbnails and attribute data, depending on the type of Gallery view selected.

Grid editor

The grid editor allows users to uniquely edit many assets and attributes in a spreadsheet-like interface.

Hidden

When an asset is marked hidden, it will not appear in keyword or advanced searches, but it will appear in all other gallery contexts. Hidden assets are primarily used to control which related assets appear in relevant search results.

Keyword search

A basic search of NetX assets takes a search term and looks for any matching values in an asset's keywords index.

Locked

Locked assets are not editable, even by administrators. Administrators can toggle this functionality on and off for individual assets.

Metadata

Embedded metadata is data stored in your physical asset files. Examples include: creation date, size, dimensions.

Multi-select

A custom attribute type that has pre-created values presented in a drop-down list. Multiple selections from this list are possible.

Navigation sidebar

Most galleries, statistics, and system settings can be accessed via the lefthand sidebar. This navigation tool is available in most contexts.

Permissions

Access to assets in NetX is controlled by permissions. Permissions determine which users will be able to view assets in the application, and can be configured on an asset-by-asset, folder, or global basis.

Portal

Portals are administrator-curated sites that use NetX assets and data but allow for additional customization in terms of branding, navigation, and available actions.

Pulldown

A custom attribute type with pre-created value options, presented as a drop-down list. Only one selection is possible at a time.

Quick edit

Quick edit is a sidebar tool used to uniformly edit the attribute data for a selection of assets.

Relationships

Asset relationships are one way to link assets more closely, with related assets appearing on individual asset detail pages.

Saved search

After performing a keyword or advanced search, the search terms and any applied modifiers can be saved. These searches will be available from the navigational sidebar, and can be re-accessed or shared.

Search facets

Search results can be refined with the use of search facets. Facets can filter results by system attribute data, such as a file type, or custom attribute data.

Selection

Selections allow users perform actions on a large group of assets such as editing attribute data en masse, downloading many assets at once, or creating collections. Selected assets are indicated by a checkmark button.

Selection bar

Once a user has created a selection, a bar will appear at the foot of the NetX browser window. This bar allows users to perform actions on all currently selected assets.

NetX assets can be shared externally via share link. Links will take users to a download page showing preview, thumbnail, and download options. Share links can be configured with security features such as password protection or an expiration timeframe.

Share with team

Certain user-created items such as attribute sets, collections, and saved searches can be shared with internal NetX users.

Tag

A custom attribute type with pre-created values. Assets can be tagged with multiple values, and an option to support free-entry by users is available.

Upload

Assets are imported to NetX via upload.

User level

User levels control the scope of users' abilities in NetX, such as allowing certain users to edit asset data. Visible actions or asset options will vary depending on user level.

Versions

Assets that need to be updated can be checked out and checked back in to create new versions of the asset, allowing users to hold on to former iterations of an asset for reference.

View

A file that is attached to an asset, such as alternate images of a product or a closed-captioning VTT file, is called a view and can be accessed from an asset's detail page.

Visible/Invisible

Administrators can choose to hide assets from all NetX users who are not administrators. This is accomplished with the visibility action found in the selection bar.
