Facial Recognition

Facial Recognition uses artificial intelligence to automatically detect and identify faces within image assets.

This feature is available for SaaS customers only. Contact your account manager for more details

Before you begin

For best results, you'll need at least one reference photo for each person you want to identify. A clear, head-and-shoulders shot works best; front-facing, with the full face visible. This helps NetX accurately recognize that person, especially in group photos or images where the face is partially obscured.

  • Faces 200x200px or larger are recommended.
  • Faces with hats, sunglasses, masks, or facial hair may not be recognized or grouped accurately.
  • Faces smaller than 40x40px within a 1920x1080 image width will not be detected.

Enabling facial recognition

When enabled, facial recognition will automatically run on any asset that is imported, reimported, or versioned.

  1. As an administrator-level user, navigate to the Systems area.
  2. Scroll to Facial recognition under AI in the side pane.
  3. Toggle the Enable facial recognition switch on.
  4. The system will begin processing your existing image assets for face detection. Once that's done, all Admins will receive an email.

Identifying faces

Once Facial Recognition has finished processing, faces can be identified (given a name) in two ways:

Once a face has been identified, all matching faces will be automatically updated with that name.

People management

In People, Producers and up can view and manage all faces detected by Facial Recognition. This page is organized into 3 tabs: Identified, Unidentified, and Hidden. Each tab can be filtered and sorted. The default sort is Last modified, descending.

Identified

Faces that have been identified appear in the Identified tab when viewing People management in the Tools area. Identified people have:

  • An avatar thumbnail, selectable from any asset they're tagged in
  • A name assigned via the Identify workflow, used across tagging, People search, and all gallery and asset contexts
  • A count of tagged assets
  • A Last modified timestamp, updated whenever a person record changes — including name, avatar, visibility, or associated faces.

The following actions are available while viewing Identified people:

Unidentified

Faces that haven't been given a name yet appear in the Unidentified tab. Multiple appearances of the same face are grouped and can be browsed using View assets, just like identified people.

The following actions are available while viewing Unidentified people:

Hidden

Hidden people are hidden from asset browsing contexts, including galleries, searches, and asset detail. When a person is hidden, any previous identification will be removed. Unhiding a face requires re-identification.

The only two actions available while a person is Hidden are:

Actions

Identify

When a person is identified (tagged with a name), they will be moved to the Identified tab and assigned an avatar. In asset detail, all matching faces will be tagged with the assigned name.

  1. Click Identify from the person's action menu.
  2. Begin typing to add a new name or filter an existing list of people.
  3. After a name has been entered, click Identify to save.

Change avatar

This action changes the thumbnail used to represent this person across People management, asset views, and search. This action is only available when a person has more than one tagged asset.

  1. Click Change avatar from the person's action menu.
  2. Select an avatar photo.
  3. Click Set avatar to save.

View assets

View assets launches a gallery of all assets tagged with the chosen person in a new browser tab. View assets is available regardless of whether or not you are viewing Identified, Unidentified, or Hidden people.

  1. Click the action menu for the person to unidentify.
  2. Click View assets

Rename

Rename updates the name assigned to the person. Rename is only available while viewing Identified people.

  1. Click Rename from the person action menu.
  2. Edit the Name of the person as desired.
  3. Click Save.

Merge

Merge combines two identified People into one record. Merge is only available while viewing Identified people.

  1. Click the action menu for the person you wish to replace with a new person.
  2. Begin typing to add a new name or filter an existing list of people.
  3. Select or add the new person.
  4. Save the change. You will immediately see the merged person with the updated avatar and asset count while managing People, as well as gallery and asset contexts.

Unidentify

Unidentify removes a person's name and moves them to the Unidentified tab. The person will still retain their avatar. Unidentify is only available while viewing Identified people.

  1. Click Unidentify from the person action menu.
  2. Click Unidentify to save.

Hide

Hide removes the person's name and avatar from all asset and gallery views, and prevents them from being tagged in asset detail. This action is available for both identified and unidentified people.

  1. Click Hide from the person action menu.
  2. When prompted, click Hide to confirm.

Asset detail

When Facial Recognition is enabled, the People attribute will appear in the Overview tab's side pane for all users. This attribute will display all detected faces in the image. Hover over a face in the image or in the People attribute to see the corresponding bounding box. Producers and up can perform actions on the people shown in this attribute.

People actions

View assets

To view all assets associated with a face, you can click on the View assets action for all people. After a person has been identified, you can click on their entry in People to view assets.

Identify

To identify a face, click on an unidentified person, or use the action menu and select Identify. You can create a new name for the face, or select from previously identified faces as you type. Note: re-identifying a face in asset detail will only change the identity of the face in this single asset and will not update any other tagged assets.

Unidentify

To unidentify a face, use its action menu and click Unidentify. Note: unidentifying a face in asset detail will only remove the identity of the face in this single asset and will not update any other tagged assets.

Search

Keyword search

Perform a search for a person from the keyword search bar:

  1. Click into the search bar at the top of the application.
  2. Choose People from the available search types, under Looking for.
  3. Begin typing the name of the person you would like to search for; identified faces will appear as you type to select from.

Advanced search

An advanced search allows you to build a more specific set of search terms. To perform a People search:

  1. Click the Advanced search button on the right side of the search bar.
  2. Select Attribute as the search type.
  3. Select People as the attribute.
  4. Begin typing to select a person from the list.
  5. Once you have finished creating your search rules, click Search.

Facial recognition settings

Confidence threshold

The Confidence Threshold sets the minimum score required for the system to detect a face or group it with similar faces. Raising the threshold means only high-certainty detections and matches are processed; lowering it captures more, but increases the chance of incorrect results. The default is 90.

Max faces per asset

Max faces per asset limits the number of people identified per asset, such as in a crowd or team photo. The default maximum is 100.

Portal configuration

Once Facial Recogition is enabled, Administrators can use the Manage attributes page to add the People attribute to the Portal.
